In this article, John Barker, Chairman of Gana Media Group, explains how the company is building an integrated sports entertainment ecosystem that connects content, streaming, data, technology, AI, and gaming around the modern sports fan.
When we became Gana Media Group, the strategy deliberately went beyond building a single gaming platform.
We wanted to create a connected sports entertainment business centered around how fans actually experience sports today. Fans are constantly moving between news, video, live matches, stats, apps, games, and conversation. Our strategy has been to build an ecosystem around that behavior. Today, that ecosystem encompasses gaming platforms, sports content, mobile apps, live football streaming, premium video, real-time data, technology partnerships, and interactive fan experiences.
One of our greatest strategic advantages is that we own this ecosystem. We’re not trying to unify the customer experience through companies we don’t control. Our content, streaming, apps, data, user experiences, and gaming products can increasingly function as a single, connected environment. That’s critical because the value isn’t simply in owning each product separately.
Value comes from connecting them. Content builds an audience. Live sports generate engagement. Data enriches the experience. The game creates another way for fans to participate. Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming the layer of intelligence that connects these experiences around each individual customer. Over the past year, we’ve been assembling these pieces at an accelerated pace.
Our partnership with Liga Premier brought live Mexican soccer to the ecosystem. Our relationship with OneFootball expanded our premium soccer video offering. We’ve integrated sports content and AI-powered predictive storytelling, expanded our apps, and continued developing our gaming products. Each advancement is important individually, but strategically they are much more powerful together. Mexico provides us with an exceptional environment to execute that strategy.
More than 100 million people are connected to the internet, and the passion for football is significantly higher than the global average. We also saw the strength of that sporting passion during the World Cup, when betting volume in the final week was 162% higher than in the first week of June, registrations increased by 136%, and gross gaming revenue (GGR) grew by 227%.
Major sporting events are incredibly powerful opportunities for customer acquisition, but our strategy aims to build relationships that extend beyond a single tournament or sport. Soccer is hugely important in Mexico, but fans also follow the NFL, basketball, baseball, boxing, UFC, and other major global sporting events throughout the year.
Owning the ecosystem gives us multiple opportunities to interact with that same customer. And AI allows us to increasingly connect the information generated across the entire environment.
The better we understand what someone watches, reads, follows, and consumes, the more relevant the experience becomes. This creates a clear strategic engine: better understanding leads to better experiences; better experiences lead to greater engagement; and stronger engagement drives retention, ultimately creating a higher-value customer relationship.
That’s why we’ve described GANA from the beginning as an integrated sports entertainment ecosystem, not just a betting business. We are jointly building the infrastructure for audience, content, distribution, technology, data, and gaming.
The sports media, technology, data, and gaming industries are converging. For the fan, they are increasingly becoming part of a single, unified experience.
That is exactly the business we are building at GANA.
NYCE perspective: evaluate the ecosystem as a funnel
The strategic test is whether separate media and product assets produce a coherent journey: audience acquisition through content, repeat engagement through live or interactive formats and measurable movement into owned products. Integration should be judged by cross-product behaviour, not the number of properties.
EstadioGana’s milestone of 50,000 registered users provides one concrete audience marker within that wider system and a starting point for measuring retention and cross-product participation.
